Every year on May 8th, the world comes together to recognize World Red Cross Day — a day dedicated to the spirit of compassion, courage, and community. It marks the birthday of Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the very first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.

This year’s theme, “Humanity • As Our Beginning,” is a powerful reminder of why the Red Cross exists in the first place. It’s a tribute to the unwavering commitment of Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers around the globe — people who risk their own safety to help others, often in the most dangerous and difficult conditions.

Whether delivering emergency aid after a natural disaster, providing shelter to refugees, or simply offering a comforting presence during a crisis, the Red Cross continues to embody the best of humanity.
